For people with prostate cancer surgery should be the last option. The procedure involves the removal of the prostate gland. Any surgery removing part of your body that is involved with so many vital functions is a major surgery.

The surgery is performed by going through the abdomen between the navel and base of the male genitals or between the anus and scrotum. In the surgery the prostate and some of the surrounding tissue around are removed. This surgery is irreversible. Recovery is not pleasant as you will now have a catheter left over from the surgery. There will be a lot of discomfort and lifting will be a problem during the healing process. There can be a loss of urinary control so most people will want to stay close to home the first few weeks after the surgery.

There are major side effects as well. Erectile dysfunction is common in men who have had prostate surgery. This is due to the nerve damage that occurs during the procedure when extra tissue around the prostate is also removed. Some men experience problems of urination control issues while having orgasm as a result of the procedure. This can have a profound negative effect on a man's relationship with his spouse.

Prostate surgery effects everyone involved from the recipient of the surgery to the loved ones around him. A lot of times counseling is necessary to help everyone heal with the new changes in their lives. There is some good news though as new procedures are created there are more options. Some of the options are seeing less long term side effects after surgery. So make sure to do your research to find out all the different surgery options available. You don't want to simply go with what your doctor recommends without knowing the options to discuss with them.
